Affordable Housing for Persons with Disabilities

Affordable Housing for Persons with Disabilities

Have you ever seen an issue that you know needs to be addressed but weren’t sure what to say or who to say it to? I’ve felt that way - especially as I’ve seen the growing issues facing people with developmental disabilities to find affordable, safe and supportive housing.

At Christian Horizons, we are so thankful for the funding that allows us to provide the services that we do to help people experience community, but there is so much more that can and should be done. These are the facts:

• over 18% of people who are homeless have a developmental disability

• 90% of adults with developmental disabilities live below the poverty line

• There are over 10,000 people in Ontario alone on waiting-lists for government funded residential services

These challenges are real – and we need tell our elected officials that something must be done now. We have a way for you to do that in less than two minutes.

By clicking the link below you will be able to give some basic information about yourself (name, email, postal code) and select a message about housing issues for people who experience disabilities. The messages can be tailored as you wish. Hit ‘send’ and the site will, on your behalf, email the three levels of government that are associated with your community (Federal, Provincial and Local) no matter where in Canada you live.

That’s all it takes. You can speak up and help make a difference.

We have an opportunity to send a collective message to decision makers that more needs to be done, and we’ve made it really easy to send that message. Our request is simple, expanded housing investment! We are asking all levels of government to dedicate 5% of all new affordable housing investments to support individuals with developmental disabilities. If this was done it would potentially direct $560 Million dollars to the housing challenges of those with a developmental disability over the next 11 years! That’s a message worth sending.

Please consider lending your voice to this request of our governments or passing this message along to others.

I’ve had the privilege over this last year to participate in the Intentional Communities Consortium. This is a group of people and agencies that are passionate about addressing the housing challenges that people with developmental disabilities face every day. If you have any questions about this opportunity or about other ways to get involved in addressing the housing crisis please do not hesitate to contact me.
